8 Bits or Less Zoetrope (2004)
low rez photography, zoetrope (8"dia)

In working with low resolution pinhole cameras and in using them to create low framerate, low resolution video, beyond attempting to address an aesthetic which is uniquely digital in nature, there is a desire to link emerging digital art forms and low-tech to historical art forms such as the Mutoscope, early cinema, including Muybridge’s motion studies, and the Daguerreotype photograph.

One of the early toys illustrating the principles of motion imagery was the Zoetrope, which consisted of a slotted drum into which strips of serial imagery were inserted and then spun in a way so that the slots would reveal images like a cinema projector shutter, and producing a motion loop. In the 8 Bits or Less Zoetrope, twelve sets of serial imagery taken from the database of videos obtained over the years with the Casio Wristcam were printed on strips which are compatible with the zoetrope seen here. The result is more or less successful motion taken from experimental digital cinema which is placed within the format of this historical form of viewer.
