My work in video was a logical outgrowth of my cultural exposure to MTV in my formative years, and from my multimedia and digital imaging. Much of my rationale behind the use of video relates to the ability to subvert mass media using readily available technologies, the perception of existence through mediation, and the investigation of motion-based algorithmic art forms. My first video was in collaboration with Jon Epstein and Sam of Haymarket Riot as an extension of Epstein and my work in Visual Sociology. The Haymarket Riot project was originally a series of videos that would introduce subversive content directly into the classroom through academic 'endorsements'. The next pase of work ran parallel courses in that I was working in generative video (free-form computer-generated imagery), and subversive content with groups like RTMark and the YesMen (from which a given visual style will be evident). However, after 2001, my belief that culture has taken a surreal/hysterical bent reflects itself in my video, as seen in the 8 Bits or lLess trilogy. And in addition, work like "The Pornogrphy of Suffering" show a more formalist approach to video art, something that I have never explored to date. The
videos as shown to the right are not shown in chronological order, nor
are all of my collaborations shown overtly for conceptual reasons.
