Self-Conscious Top Hat (Minitron)
Top Hat, Electronics (2002)

“Art is not a universal channel for communication. I bring what I see to the piece of work; you see what you see in it. Hopefully we may see some of the same things in that artwork. However, I realize that we may not – at all.”
- P. Lichty

This series, which echoes again in the Self-Conscious Top Hat plays with the idea of surveillance and dialogue as personal monologue. The mirrors, including the Baby Moon hubcap used as such, is reminiscent of the ubiquitous mirrors in convenience and department stores. In many ways the sculpture is said to be regarding the viewer through its own ‘eyes’ (or, ‘windows of the soul’) as much as the viewer is regarding it However, the fact that the gaze is actually one that is cast back upon the viewer, inferring that the viewer is the one who finally creates the final narrative in any piece of art.
