In considering the physical representation of low resolution digital media, I was interested in whether the childrens’ Lite Brite toy could be used as such a ‘medium’. When I received the Cube, which was chosen for its sculptural qualities, the hexagonal arrangement of the pegs was a challenge for creating images which in essence rely on a Cartesian Grid. The result was to rotate the images sixty degrees and allow for some skew in the image, letting the digital images to slant across the screen. However, the choice of colors available was also quite limited, and also did not allow for grayscale representation. Secondly, the number of pegs supplied surely did not allow for 100% coverage of the image plane. So the result was to consider the black background of the old 80’s arcade screens with the familiar characters seen in many of those games, contrasting a contemporary childhood toy with my own, and furthermore forcing me to ponder a ‘minimal’ approach to digital representation, although in this case the terms of which were greatly stretched. |
