Cuts Both Ways (Penis Knife)- 1994-2003

Originally conceived as a sophomoric pun on the dis-memberment of John Bobbitt, the ill-conceived piece became an indictment of sexual violence. Being that the penis has so many weapon-related metaphors such as the ‘Bold Blade of Passion” ascribed to it, the leap to ‘weaponize’ the male member in historical practices in warfare, as well as the forces of male domination in contemporary society make my commentary rather pale in comparison. This piece abounds with metaphors of flesh and blood through the use of wax and crimson hues, and the rose signifies everything from the inadvertent to forceful loss of innocence in human existence, as the experience is seldom what was expected to the institutionalized practices of sexual violence practiced worldwide from commodified sexuality to wartime rape. The steel of the savagely serrated blade is placed in contrast with the waxen handle, begging to question which end of the blade can be the sharpest…
