17280 (The Speed of Dissent, aka Meaningful/Meaningless) (2002-)

In a period of nationalist fervor, government secrecy, and eroding civil rights, what is the role of online dissent without physical reinforcement except that of empty signification? This installation questions the nature of US national identity, the nature of representation (by assigning the lables 'Meaningful" and Meaningless" to various websites accessible through the clickable burning flag) as wella s the nature of policical signification through the algorithmic symbolic destruction of American flag.s The piece, launched on July 4, 2002 algorithmically 'burns' a flag every five seconds, which is represented on the screen.

This installation also sherishes the right in the United States to burn the national standard, while questionin the symbolism of such an act when represented online.

The one million flag mark was reached on approximately September 11th, 2002. However, a bug in the code has revealed an inaccuracy in the recording, and is being addressed.
