HALO is a system for implicitly-controllable, reconfigurable, and programmable garments.Incorporating hardware, software, and physical design, HALO eschews the notion of electronic fashion being about cyborgs, stock quotes, or email. Instead, it ises compuation and technology as expressive, dynamic elements of fashion. A series of interconnected HALO units, each with its own microcontroller and glowing light panel recieve power and rhythm input from a 'mama' unit equipped with serial (from PC and infrared (from wireless, Palm Pilot, other HALO) recievers. |

| Bio Elise Co is a doctoral candidate and research assistant at the MIT Media Laboratory, working in the Aesthetics and Computation Group (ACG) under professor John Maeda. Before arriving at the lab, she studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she graduated with a BS in 1998. During her undergraduate career, Elise developed interests in computer science and technology alongside her architectural training; this simultaneous focus on design and computation led her to the ACG. As a PhD student, Elise's particular interest is in fashion, and in the ways that technology and computation can expand the notions of fashion, relationships to the body, expression, and communication. This involves creating new garment paradigms, not of "wearable computing" cyborgs, but of carefully-designed pieces that are responsive, reconfigurable, and beautiful. Elise takes advantage of her diverse interests and skills by designing and executing pieces on all levels: hardware, software, and physical form. This maintains close control over finished work as well as appreciation of the craft and effort involved. Elise has presented her work in Tokyo and New York. |
